For many people gloves are purely functional – an afterthought you fish out of your coat pocket in January and ignore until next year. We think it’s worth elevating them from that status. A good pair of gloves finishes off a winter outfit better than anything else. They’re the detail that shows you’ve styled yourself, not just layered up and hoped for the best. Most gloves are too extreme one way or another. They’re either quietly functional to the point of looking borrowed from Millets, or they’re so fancy they don’t keep your hands warm and leave you cursing at bus stops in February. We’ve looked at both sides of the glove equation, then gone beyond that to find gloves that exist confidently at either end of the spectrum but without the compromises. The gloves you’ll find here can deal with actual situations. Thin leather gloves that fit snugly and look great thrown on with a tailored coat. Knitted numbers in wool or cashmere blends that actually keep your hands warm without looking like they sacrifice style for function. Longer gloves for nights out when you want something a little dressier. Touchscreen compatible gloves that don’t feel like a cheesy compromise because they’re well made enough you don’t notice. Fit is important with gloves. Too many bulk around the wrists or pinch at the fingers and can spoil a great outfit. Gloves here have been selected because they’ve got real structure, taper at the right point and stay where you put them when you’re wearing them outside, not just half-on in the warm fittings room of a shop. Colours have been considered too. Black and brown will never let you down, but we’ve picked up some gloves in colours like burgundy, camel and forest green if you want yours to make a bit more of a statement. Sometimes gloves are the reason you wear an outfit. That’s totally fine by us. Winter lasts a long time. Make sure you actually enjoy dressing for it.
