Description

This is a printed edwardian era cotton petticoat or underskirt. But it also makes an excellent skirt. It comes from my personal collection & is part of my recent wardrobe clearout. I am sorry to see it go because it is a beautiful piece, in wonderful worn condition, but I am not wearing it & it should be worn. So here you go. Please read the condition notes carefully. It is strong & wearable but has obvious signs of wear. To me that only adds to its story & charm, but if you are expecting perfection, this is not it. It is a nice lightweight & soft cotton, fairly opaque but will be slightly see through if the light is shining just so. It has a deep waistband & is quite flat at the front. There is a small ruffle of 3 inches, 11 inches from the hem. It has a tie waist with a deep opening at the back & a single button (if you choose to wear this as a skirt, you need to either wear something underneath or perhaps a add a couple of snaps to stop the opening gaping). The fabric at the back gathers into the waistband seam which means that although the skirt is quite flat fronted (although looks a bit full because of the ruffle) at the front, there is excess fabric & fullness at the back. I am no expert on victorian & edwardian clothing. Might this be earlier than thought. Usually when I see & early garment & excess fabric at the back, I just instantly & I hasten to add without any education, think ‘bustle’. The skirt is marginally longer at the back than the front but not by much. My large backside would be enough to fill that excess fabric & make the skirt hang evenly I think. The cotton has a nice print. It is of a tiny cluster of flowers & leaves in faded black, grey & taupe. Just to throw something else out thereit is possible that the tie & button go at the front & the excess fabric is there to accommodate a baby bump. It could be quite clever & work for both. The main measurement on this is the waist, both the top fo the waist & the bottom of the waistband as these are quite fitted. Both my mannequins have 25 inch waists so this fitted well with it tied at its tightest. But it is a tie waist at the top with a part drawstring (just at the back). If I open it out, it goes up to 29 inches. But there are two things to keep in mind that mean it may be able to go bigger. The first is that there are two darts, one at each waist side, where it has been taken in. It looks like they could be taken out & that should give 2 inches total, possibly a bit more. The other thing to keep in mind is that this has a deep waistband. It is 3.5 inches deep & the single button is on the lower seam of the waistband. With this buttoned, at 3.5 inches below the waist, the skirt measures a static 35 inches. You could hike the skirt up slightly higher, you could move the button slightly. There is flexibility to make this skirt accommodate more sizes if needed. The hips are fairly free. the length down the centre front (if the opening is at the back) is 40 inches. The length
